Dexter the Devoted: Dexter is a 5 1/2-month old, neutered, brindled pit bull terrier puppy. Once abandoned in Central Jersey, Dexter is currently being fostered in Point Pleasant, NJ with a dog trainer who specializes in behavior modification. Dexter is housebroken, crate trained and shows great promise with a few basic commands already, such as: sit, wait, down, stay, drop, leave it, off, and the all important “No”. Dexter lives with 3 other pit bulls at his foster home, one female, and two males. They all get along beautifully. Dexter meets and greets other dogs and small children with kindness while on walks. It won’t take long to fall hopelessly in love with his adorable, warm brown eyes, puppy-soft coat and just the cutest face you’ve ever seen. His long, lean legs may remind you of a baby deer when you watch him walk. At 35 pounds already, he’s sure to be a pretty big boy! Like most puppies, Dexter is extremely inquisitive and likes to occupy himself by investigating the world around him. He’s just in heaven with a plain card board box, a pile of dirty laundry, and of course your favorite flip flops. Since he can’t reach out and touch everything like a human child, most of that investigating is done with his mouth, so he’ll need someone willing to keep a close eye on him at all times until he is older and has shown more maturity in being left alone. Dexter also loves the water and his webbed feet make him an especially good swimmer. If all that isn’t enough, Dexter is an awesome cuddler! He just loves to curl up next to you, on top of you, just someplace close where he can take a deep breath, lay his little head on you, and stare at you while his eyes get heavy and he drifts off to sleep. Now here’s the part where you can decide if you think you’ll make a good match for this little guy: Dexter needs an owner who knows exactly what it means to be a responsible owner of a bully breed. Dexter is an extremely devoted dog: he’ll be devoted to you, and devoted to learning exactly what you expect from him. So what will be expected from you is the ability to be a strong pack leader who is equally devoted to patience and consistency as his new owner. You will need to be firm with him. Firm is not dominant, nor aggressive. A strong pack leader understands that all dogs (bully breeds even more so) need assertive, calm leadership. Your entire family will need to be on the same page as far as following a plan to help show Dexter how to grow up to be the perfect addition to your family.
