I went to the shelter where I used to volunteer on a Saturday about 2
½ years ago. I found this new dog that had come in. He was lying
there on his steel grate staring up at me, both eyes swollen shut with
infection. His left front paw was swollen and he had scars and open
wounds all over his body.
The shelter manager told me a woman had brought him in. She said she
stole him from her boyfriend who was going to kill him because he
would not fight. Apparently he had been thrown in a fight ring and
refused to defend himself, probably more than once, judging from the
wounds in various stages of healing across his body.
His face was gentle and the shelter wasn’t about to spend any money on
medical care for him so I took him home to foster, with a stop at my
veterinarian’s office beforehand. His eyes were badly infected and I
needed to put drops in them three times per day. Some of his wounds
were infected as well and I was instructed to bathe him with a
prescription shampoo every day.
Great, I thought, I’m going to take this 80 pound fight ring dog and
put him in my tub and spray him down with water, his face right next
to mine. This should be fun.
But Levi was appreciative of the care he was receiving and trusted me
intrinsically. He cooperated with me fully. He extended only
friendship to my other dogs even though it was other dogs who had torn
him nearly to pieces. He greets everyone he meets with a wagging tail
and a friendly, enthusiastic hello. He loves children and is gentle
with cats.
I don’t know why he has sat here for 2 ½ years without a willing
adopter. Maybe his scars scare people away. Maybe there are just so
many dogs that he has been overlooked. He needs a home of his own
with people who have plenty of time to play with him and might let him
sleep in their bed. He deserves this now.
He is probably a Cane Corso/Shar-pei mix and about 4 ½ years old. He
is neutered, micro-chipped and up to date on shots. He is friendly to
everyone he meets. If you’d like to meet him, please contact Steve:

On '10-08-04, Levi was adopted.
